Turkey says it won’t recognize referendum results

The official representative of the Turkish President, Ibrahim Kalyn, recalled Ankara's position on Crimea, which refuses to consider it part of Russia

Turkey does not recognize the results of referendums in the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, as well as in the territories of the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions controlled by Russian troops, said the presidential spokesman Turkey Ibrahim Kalyn in an interview with NTV.

“Our position on Donetsk and Lugansk is the same as on Crimea. We do not recognize the referenda that Russia wants to hold. We continue to support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine»,— Kalyn said.

He called Turkey “the only country” that seeks to end hostilities in Ukraine.

The Turkish side has repeatedly stated that it does not recognize the annexation of Crimea to Russia in 2014. In particular, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the return of the peninsula to Ukraine necessary to protect the country's territorial integrity. The Russian side, in turn, considers the issue of Crimea's ownership closed.

In the DPR and LPR, as well as in the Russian-controlled territories of Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, referendums on joining Russia began simultaneously on September 23. Voting will last until September 27.

Residents of the Donbass republics must answer the question of whether they support the entry of the DPR and LPR into Russia. The population of the parts of the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions controlled by Russian troops will have to answer: do they support the secession of these regions from Ukraine, their formation as independent states and joining Russia.

The largest turnout, according to the authorities, is in the DPR— 23.64%.

President Vladimir Putin has already assured that the Russian side will support “the decision about their future, which will be made by the majority of residents of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.”

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a military operation in Ukraine, the purpose of which he called “protecting people who have been subjected to bullying, genocide by the Kyiv regime for eight years,” as well as “demilitarization and denazification.” neighboring country. At the same time, he argued that the Russian side did not intend to occupy Ukrainian territory.

Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, back in early August, called holding referendums a condition for withdrawing from negotiations with Russia.

The G7 countries (Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Canada, France, Japan and the USA) stated that they would never recognize the results of the referendums, and expressed their readiness to take additional measures against Russia, as well as individuals and legal entities within the country and beyond its borders, “providing political or economic support to Russia's illegal attempts to change the status of the territory of Ukraine.”
