Snake Island has been under the control of the Russian military since February 25. On May 9, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the Armed Forces of Ukraine had successfully repelled an attempt to seize the island. This was announced in his Telegram channel by the governor of the city Mikhail Razvozhaev.
“Today Sevastopol said goodbye to Alexei Vladimirovich Baranov. Sergeant of military unit 43071. Aleksey Vladimirovich was wounded while defending Snake Island from an attack by Ukronazis on the eve of May 9th. Doctors fought for his life, but, unfortunately, they failed to save our warrior, he died from his wounds. Let's remember our hero»,— the politician wrote.
Baranov was born in the village of Budyonnovskaya in the Proletarsky district of the Rostov region, and in 2008 he graduated from Sevastopol State University.
Snake Island is part of the Kiliysky district of the Odessa region. It became part of Ukraine in accordance with the Paris Agreement of 1947 after the transfer of Bessarabia to the USSR. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Serpentine became the subject of a territorial dispute between Ukraine and Romania. In 2009, the International Court of Justice in The Hague recognized the Serpent's Island, not a rock, as Romania sought.
On February 25, on the second day of the Russian special operation, the Ukrainian authorities reported that they had lost control over the island. On the same day, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that 82 people had laid down their arms “in the vicinity of Zmeiny Island” and voluntarily surrendered to the Russian Armed Forces.

May 9, the Russian Defense Ministry reported an unsuccessful attempt to capture Serpentine by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. According to the agency, more than 50 Ukrainian servicemen were killed in an attempt to seize the island on the eve of Victory Day, a large amount of military equipment was destroyed, including planes, helicopters and boats. No casualties were reported among Russian servicemen.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation to “demilitarize” and “denazification” Ukraine 24 February. The Russian Ministry of Defense disclosed data on the losses of the Russian side twice: on March 2 and 25. According to the agency, as of March 25, 1,351 Russian servicemen were killed and 3,825 were wounded.
