The next Council of EU Foreign Ministers may be held in Kiev to demonstrate solidarity with Ukraine. This was stated by the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, following the meeting of the EU Council.

«We can meet anywhere, why not in Kiev»,— he said, answering journalists' questions.

According to him, this will be possible if the situation around Ukraine worsens to “demonstrate solidarity”, but so far “no decisions have been made on this issue.”

Earlier, Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu made a proposal to hold the Council of EU Foreign Ministers in Kiev. “Swift progress is needed in the preparation of firm and credible sanctions. I suggested considering the possibility of organizing a meeting of [EU] foreign ministers in Kiev in solidarity with Ukraine,— he wrote on Twitter.

In a response on Twitter, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba thanked his Romanian counterpart for the “great idea”, emphasizing that he was ready to hold such a meeting in Kiev.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that Russia has never voiced threats against the Ukrainian people.

In December 2021, the Russian Foreign Ministry sent draft agreements on security guarantees to the United States and NATO , in which he proposed to the alliance to consolidate the non-expansion of the alliance to the east, in particular at the expense of the countries of the former USSR, and also to refuse to deploy weapons in countries adjacent to Russia. After that, from January 9 to 12, three rounds of negotiations between the United States, Russia and NATO took place. They have not given any results yet.

On January 24, NATO announced the transfer of ships and aircraft to Bulgaria, Romania and Lithuania, and the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced the allocation of €1.2 billion loans and grants from – for the threat of “invasion”. State Department spokesman Ned Price also ruled out any concessions to Russia and said that the United States insists on reciprocity and expects reciprocal steps from Moscow as well.
